Insert Accented Characters with ASCII Codes. To enter an ASCII code, all you have to do is hold down your Alt key while typing out a numeric code on your number pad. For example, the code for a lowercase letter “a” with a grave accent is 133. So, you’d hold down Alt, type 133, and then let go of the Alt key. For others: on the Insert tab of the ribbon, click Symbol > More Symbols. Make sure that (normal text) is selected in the Font dropdown. Scroll up or down until you see the accented letter that you want and select it. You'll see the keyboard shortcut near the bottom of the dialog. Click Insert to insert the character into the document.

You’ve probably been wondering how to get accented letters into your words when preparing documents using word processors like Microsoft Word. How do you get to include them? As it turns out, the Windows 10 operating system and Microsoft Office Word 2010 or later already have inbuilt capabilities to insert accent symbols in documents that you prepare in them.
Accent symbols are pretty important. They allow you to clarify the meaning of a word to a user, whether it is the Spanish n or the French e. Consider the word “resume”, for example it can either mean to go back to work or some activity that you had been undertaking before. When written as “résumé”, it refers to the summary you write up and send to a potential employer of your prior work experience.
Accent Music Definition
Note, however, that the accents you put over letters aren’t the same as the ones you use in music. The accent music definition is slightly different from the accent word definition in that, in music, the accents are placed over music symbols. They do, however, serve the same overall purpose, in that they tell the music player how to articulate certain musical phrases.
Microsoft Word already has a command Ribbon that includes symbols that you can add to your words. These symbols include the most common accented letters found in various words. However, the process is fairly slow. There are shortcuts on the keyboard which you can use to insert symbols like the circumflex, grave or acute accents. There is also another method you can use on Windows 7 that involves combining the Alt key and numeric code keys to insert accented letters.
Open Word
In order to perform the shortcuts, you will have to have a document open. The first step, therefore, is to open the Microsoft Word application on your computer.
Locate Document
Once inside Microsoft Word, go to the File button and click on it. There you will see a drop-down menu with a number of options. Click on the “Open” option. You will be taken to a mini file explorer where you can select the file to open. Locate and open the document you would like to insert the accent in.
Ctrl and Punctuation
Once the document is open, press the Ctrl key on your keyboard and a punctuation key at the same time. The punctuation keys you can press include the following: the tilde, colon, caret, apostrophe, and grave symbols. All of these are accents that can be placed above letters. For example, if you press the Ctrl key and the grave key at the same time, you will create a grave accent symbol. If you combine the Ctrl key and the caret key, you will insert the circumflex symbol. Each of the punctuation keys mentioned above caters to a specific accent.
Press Letter
Now press the letter you intend to accent. The accented version of the letter appears.
Tip
- You can also insert symbols using the Alt key and a four-digit code. Use the numeric keypad located at the side of your keyboard. To activate it, press the Num Lock key. For example, if you press the Alt key followed by 0225 you will insert the acute accent over the lowercase “a”. You can find a list of four-digit codes on the Pennsylvania State University’s website.
